Live Music and Performing Arts

Since it seems the DSO may not be performing this year, and who wants to drive all the way downtown if you don't have to, what can we do to promote our local artists and talent? Some Clarkston area non-profit organizations want to provide a venue close to home that provides a place for local talent to perform. Is there interest from the north Oakland County community and what resources are out there to make this happen?

  1. Many Oakland County communities already have orchestras (and had for years). Flint's orchestra is also very good. Oakland County has 62 cities/villages/townships and many more areas that consider themselves a community. Will we need one in every?

  2. not just north OC, but county wide would be awesome.

  3. Next well need two zoos and two hockey teams. If we don't start acting like a region we will only fall further behind our competitors.

  4. Just outside of Oakland County, (the City of Fenton has music in the park at the Gazebo on Thursday evenings in the summer months. (technically Fenton has annexed a small portion of Holly Township so part of the City is inside Oakland County, just not the downtown/gazebo area)

Anyway, I thought the Village of Milford also had outdoor musical programs?

Village of Clarkston has outdoor concerts on 6 Friday nights in the summer. Still a lot of days to fill up and it was real cold outside this winter.

  7. Clarkston resident's already have and are paying for one of the best theaters in Oakland County. Where is it? It is located in your Clarkston High School. Take a look. This is a beautiful, well equiped theater that could support professional shows. Talk to the school officials about using this facility...you are paying for it.

An interesting concept as I am a big proponent of using underutilized buildings, especially if they are built and operated with public dollars. I believe they charge for the use of the facility, or at least they do for the Junior High Auditorium, so this would have to be assessed. Both are somewhat large for smaller performances and audiences, although I'm sure everyone would love it if it could be filled on a regualar basis. This is something to look into for all communities to make better use of public funds and buildings
